A homecoming of data and DNA

9/1/20252 min read

For our Brazilian founder, Francielly Monteiro, the journey to Kenya started with a single piece of data: a DNA test. In a country like Brazil, where the violent rupture of slavery erased countless ancestral lines, family names and histories, this information was a compass pointing home. So she went.

The trip was the perfect opportunity to connect that personal thread to our work, exploring the intersection of identity, roots and community-led conservation on the ground, while seeing how technology is (or isn't) already part of the story.

The result is a series of 3 mini-docs and reels, each one born from a true partnership on the ground. Huge asante sana to our Kenyan #DreamTeam: filmmaker Zazu Mophasa, made in Mathare, working alongside the incredible talents of Esther Adhiambo and Doreen Njora. We are proud to present our Roots and Algorithms: Kenya series. Three stories of innovation and community, fueled by Gen Z power:

Mathare Slums Community Association (MaSCA): In the heart of one of Kenya's largest informal settlements, @matharecommunity is transforming a waste crisis into a source of income and dignity. See how they're building a circular economy from the ground up, while building climate resilience.

Youth Pawa: On the shores of the Indian Ocean in Mombasa, powerful algorithms are passed down through generations. A science that knows restoring an ecosystem isn’t just about planting trees. @youthpawaorg is applying this ancestral tech to become their own solution.

Ceriops Environmental Research Organization: Along the coast, mangroves are a vital shield against climate change. @ceriops.env_research combines deep scientific research with local community knowledge to protect and restore these critical "blue forests". Explore the frontline of mangrove conservation in Kenya.
